Reflecting the same grungey attitude of its largely adolescent audience base and featuring the same wild violence, anger and subversion, it’s no wonder that horror movies and rock music go so perfectly hand-in-hand. Often inspiring each other in a symbiotic relationship, Rob Zombie is a shining example of how the two mediums can cross over, with the musician and film director instilling both his creative endeavours with a dose of horror and rock ‘n’ roll.

Lathering his films with a layer of dirt, blood and grunge, Zombie has become an icon of the genre thanks to films such as The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses and The Lords of Salem which purposely subvert the manners of ‘good taste’. Often collaborating with such actors as Richard Brake, Richard Edson and the late Sid Haig, Zombie also has a self-aware side, filling his 2019 film 3 From Hell with a range of cameos from across the world of TV, film and music.

Wishing to cross the boundaries of music and cinema, many iconic performers have appeared throughout the landscape of horror, including the likes of rappers such as Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dog and Ice-T, as well as influential rock artists including David Bowie, Debbie Harry and Tom Waits.

Looking under each and every rock of the genre, let’s take a look at the ten most incredible musical cameos in the history of horror.

The 10 greatest musician cameos in horror movies:

10. Aaliyah – Queen of the Damned (Michael Rymer, 2002)

Representing just one of the many films the American singer, actress and model appeared in, Aaliyah’s leading role in the forgettable Queen of the Damned remains a remarkably strange performance.

Playing the monstrous queen of vampires, Akasha, in Michael Rymer’s strange gothic horror, Queen of the Damned would mark Aaliyah’s final on-screen appearance, with the film being released just six months after her tragic death. Adapted from Anne Rice’s novel of the same name, Aaliyah put on a compelling, if bizarre performance, standing out as her most memorable film in a confusing filmography.

9. Dee Snider – Strangeland (John Pieplow, 1998)

The frontman of the band Twisted Sister, Dee Snider wrote and starred in this poor quality horror film from the late 1990s, that couldn’t quite decide what it wanted to be, becoming very forgettable in the process.

Following the sadistic story of a detective pursuing a serial killer who lures teenagers to their deaths over the internet, the film is a Se7en wannabe that never reaches the heights of the David Fincher classic. Dee stars as the frightening antagonist Captain Howdy, a terrifying tattooed stalker who kills his victims in disturbing, yet undeniably creative ways. It’s not a particularly fun watch.

8. Snoop Dogg – Bones (Ernest R. Dickerson, 2001)

If there’s one person you can always count on for a cameo it’s Snoop Dogg, with the eccentric rapper appearing in Brüno, Scary Movie 5 and Pitch Perfect 2 among many other films. Rarely, however, does he play a leading role.

This is exactly what happened in Ernest R. Dickerson’s 2001 Blaxploitation film Bones where the rapper plays a vengeful ghost who comes back from the dead to kill his murderers and fix his community. Also featuring the likes of Pam Grier, Clifton Powell and Michael T. Weiss, Bones is a surprisingly thrilling watch, with Snoop Dogg taking on the lead reigns with a good dose of charisma.

7. Busta Rhymes – Halloween: Resurrection (Rick Rosenthal, 2002)

When horror movies were going through a period of reinvention at the turn of the new century, the genre was truly living out its darkest days, with endless sequels to old properties such as Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween

The eighth film in the ongoing series, and the last before Rob Zombie reimagined the series in 2007, Halloween: Resurrection follows six teenagers who spend the night in the childhood home of Michael Myers as part of a new reality show, only to meet a predictable end. Surprisingly the appearance of Busta Rhymes may be the film’s saving grace, playing the show’s director who remarkably goes up against the horror icon at one point to hilarious results.

6. Ice-T – Leprechaun In The Hood (Rob Spera, 2000)

Horror movies don’t get much sillier than the Leprechaun franchise, constantly riding the line between slasher horror and parody as it tells the story of a murderous, humourous Leprechaun played by Warwick Davis.

Playing a hip hop producer, Ice-T appears in a tremendously silly role in this straight-to-video horror, delivering an iconic scene as he shares a joint with the titular villain, whereby the Leprechaun says: “A friend with weed, is a friend indeed”. Despite his role in the film, however, Ice-T did feature in several cinema classics, including New Jack City by Mario Van Peebles and Surviving the Game by Ernest R. Dickerson.

5. Kelly Rowland – Freddy vs. Jason (Ronny Yu, 2003)

The genre cycle certainly went full circle in 2003 upon the release of Freddy vs. Jason, a film that reduced two icons of horror to mere figures of strange ridicule in this satirical horror action movie.

Returning to terrorise the teenagers of Elm Street, Freddy Krueger runs into difficulty when he finds that this time Jason Voorhees is out to get him. Several bystanders get caught up in this chaos with the Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland being just one of these unfortunate victims, appearing as Kia Waterson, a woman who gives Krueger a shocking piece of her mind before she’s brutally dispatched by the Freddy.

4. Tom Waits – Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992)

Tom Waits is a singer that is very familiar with the silver screen, having appeared in several iconic greats including The Ballad of Buster Scruggs by the Coen brothers and Mystery Train by Jim Jarmusch.

Appearing alongside Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins, Waits’ role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula is up there with one of his finest screen performances, playing Renfield, Dracula’s deranged loyal servant. Less a cameo and more a genuinely great supporting performance, Waits proves that he is more than just a singer in Francis Ford Coppola’s gothic take on a classic.

3. Alice Cooper – Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (Rachel Talalay, 1991)

Appearing on several soundtracks for horror films such as Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Cooper has also taken cameo roles in movies such as Monster Dog and John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness

In Rachel Talalay’s Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Cooper shows up as the unlikely character of Freddy Krueger’s adoptive father, an abusive drunkard enthusiastically played by the iconic musician. Starring in a major moment of the beloved franchise, Alice Cooper managed to worm himself into the history of A Nightmare on Elm Street becoming a key character in the eccentric series.

2. David Bowie – The Hunger (Tony Scott, 1983)

As well as being one of the finest musicians ever to grace the stage, David Bowie also became a cultural icon in the late 20th-century, starring in several cult classics including The Man Who Fell to Earth, Labyrinth and The Hunger.

From the late Top Gun director Tony Scott, Hunger is a gothic romance that details a love triangle between a dangerous vampire, a cellist and a gerontologist. Playing the erotic vampire, Bowie brings his signature style and eccentric mystery to the lead role, helping to make Scott’s film a seductive, elegant success. Appearing alongside Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon, it is Bowie who shines among the professionals.

1. Debbie Harry – Videodrome (David Cronenberg, 1983)

Recognised as one of the greatest body horror films of all time, Cronenberg’s Videodrome is an enigmatic study into the role of mass media on the fragile human psyche, featuring James Woods and the surprising appearance of Debbie Harry in the lead roles.

The lead singer of Blondie, Harry plays the lead love interest, the seductive Nicki Brand in her very first starring role. Putting on a surprisingly fantastic performance, Debbie Harry demonstrates her sheer versatility as a performer, becoming a key part of Cronenberg’s classic film. Pulling the lead character further into the dark, sinister world of ‘Videodrome’, Harry plays an unforgettable lead character.

While the field of quantum information science has experienced progress in recent years, the widespread use of quantum computers is still limited. One challenge is the ability to only use a small number of “qubits,” the unit that performs calculations in a quantum computer, because current platforms are not designed to allow multiple qubits to “talk” to one another. In order to address this challenge, materials need to be efficient at quantum entanglement, which occurs when the states of qubits remain linked no matter their distance from one another, as well as coherence, or when a system can maintain this entanglement.

In this study, Jog looked at Ta2NiSe5, a material system that has strong electronic correlation, making it attractive for quantum devices. Strong electronic correlation means that the material’s atomic structure is linked to its electronic properties and the strong interaction that occurs between electrons.

To study Ta2NiSe5, Jog used a modification of a technique developed in the Agarwal lab known as the circular photogalvanic effect, where light is engineered to carry an electric field and is able to probe different material properties. Developed and iterated in the past several years, this technique has revealed insights about materials such as silicon and Weyl semimetals in ways that are not possible with conventional physics and materials science experiments.

But the challenge in this study, says Agarwal, is that this method has only been applied in materials without inversion symmetry, whereas Ta2NiSe5 does haveinversion symmetry, Jog “wanted to see if this technique can be used to study materials which have inversion symmetry which, from a conventional sense, should not be producing this response,” says Agarwal.

After connecting with Harnagea to obtain high-quality samples of Ta2NiSe5, Jog and Agarwal used a modified version of the circular photogalvanic effect and were surprised to see that there was a signal being produced. After conducting additional studies to ensure that this was not an error or an experimental artifact, they worked with Mele to develop a theory that could help explain these unexpected results.

Mele says that the challenge with developing a theory was that what was hypothesized about the symmetry of Ta2NiSe5 did not align with the experimental results. Then, after finding a previous theory paper that suggested that the symmetry was lower than what was hypothesized, they were able to develop an explanation for these data. “We realized that, if there was a low temperature phase where the system would spontaneously shear, that would do it, suggesting that this material was deforming to this other structure,” says Mele.

By combining their expertise from both experiment and theory, an essential component of the success of this project, the researchers found that this material had broken symmetry, a finding that has significant implications on using this and other materials in future devices. This is because symmetry plays a fundamental role in classifying phases of matter and, ultimately, in understanding what their downstream properties will be.

These results also provide a platform for finding and describing similar properties in other types of materials. “Now, we have a tool that can probe very subtle symmetry breaking in crystalline materials. To understand any complex material, you have to think about symmetries because it has huge implications,” says Agarwal.

While there remains a “long journey” before Ta2NiSe5 can be incorporated into quantum devices, the researchers are already making progress on evaluating this phenomenon further. In the laboratory, Jog and Agarwal are interested in studying additional energy levels within Ta2NiSe5, looking for potential topological properties and using the circular photogalvanic method to study other correlated systems to see if they might also have similar properties. On the theory side, Mele is studying how prevalent this phenomena might be in other material systems and is developing suggestions for other materials for experimentalists to study in the future.

“What we’re seeing here is a response that shouldn’t occur but does under these circumstances,” says Mele. “Expanding the space of structures that you have, where you can turn on these effects that are nominally forbidden, is really important. It’s not the first time that’s ever happened in spectroscopy, but, whenever it does occur, it’s an interesting thing.”

Along with presenting a new tool for studying complex crystals to the research community, this work also provides important insights into the types of materials that can provide two key features, entanglement and macroscopic coherence that are crucial for future quantum applications that range from medical diagnostics, low-power electronics, and sensors.

“The long-term idea, and one of the biggest goals of condensed matter physics, is to be able to understand these highly entangled states of matter because these materials themselves can do a lot of complex simulation,” says Agarwal. “It could be that, if we can understand these types of systems, they can become natural platforms to do large-scale quantum simulation.”

Paul Walter Hauser, who stars as Horace in Cruella, reveals his Cockney accent was inspired by another Disney villain’s sidekick from Hook.

Paul Walter Hauser reveals that his accent in Cruella was inspired by Hook. After his breakout role in Craig Gillespie’s 2017 Tonya Harding biopic, I, Tonya, Hauser went on to star in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell in the following years. This year, Hauser was reunited with Gillespie for Disney’s live-action prequel to 101 Dalmatians. While Cruella is far from a perfect origin story, its performances have been met with universal praise, namely Emma Thompson as The Baroness, Emma Stone in the titular role, along with Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser as Cruella’s henchmen, Jasper and Horace.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Considering it has already been greenlit for a sequel, Cruella is the latest successful attempt by Disney to breathe new life into its back catalog of IPs with live-action reboots. Long before the live-action Mulan or Maleficent, there was Hook, the 1991 redux of Disney’s animated Peter Pan from 1953. The Steven Spielberg-directed film stars Robin Williams as Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell, and Bob Hoskins as Mr. Smee. Though Spielberg admitted to being disappointed with the film, it has gained a strong cult following in the years since.

Hauser appears to be one of Hook’s biggest fans, as he is now revealing the inspiration behind his accent as Horace: the late Bob Hoskins’ voice as Mr. Smee. In an early look at Cruella’s special behind-the-scenes bonus features from Collider, which features cast interviews and never-before-seen footage, Hauser says he grew up watching Hook, and Mr. Smee’s voice has been ingrained in his memory. When he emulated Hoskins’ accent for Cruella’s dialect coach, Neil Swain, they made the mutual decision to go with that voice for Horace. Watch the BTS clip below:

Cruella arrives early on all major digital platforms June 25, followed by a Blu-ray release on September 21. As usual, its special features will include bloopers, deleted scenes, and other BTS footage. The clip above comes from one of Cruella’s special features titled “The Sidekick Angle,” of which there will be many more available with the purchase of Cruella.

It’s especially interesting that the accent takes inspiration from a fellow Disney character. What’s more is how coincidental it is that Hauser’s inspiration for Horace’s accent, one of Cruella’s henchmen, comes from another famous Disney villain’s sidekick in Mr. Smee, Captain Hook’s loyal first mate. With news that a sequel to Cruella is already in development with director Craig Gillespie and writer Tony McNamara expected to return, this likely won’t be the last time Horace’s glorious cockney accent is heard.

Brooke Edler Hebert is a director, writer and editor of dark and quirky horror movies. She is also bringing the first horror film festival to Cité des Arts next month on March 11 and 12. Follow her company, Southern Gothic Entertainment, to find out more.

Brooke is creative, hard-working, delightfully awkward (in the best way) and tells me she’s a weirdo who has found her people. She’s also fascinating, and I have a feeling big things are about to happen for her.

At the moment, Brooke is also raising funds for her next short film — her sixth — wonderfully named, “Violet Butterfield: Makeup Artist for the Dead.” It’s a dark comedy, set in the ’60s and has a message about being yourself that will resonate with all of those who are different in some way (and that’s all of us). You can find out more about this project — and help fund it — on their facebook page @VioletButterfieldMakeup. This is the dark comedy we didn’t know we needed.

What was your first job? My first job was as a waitress at a Pizza Hut in New Iberia. I was 17. I remember I had to get a work permit, and I wasn’t allowed to serve alcohol.

Describe a typical day in your life. A typical day in my life right now is preparation. I am definitely in preparation status. Next month, a lot is happening. We are shooting a new short film, we are having our first year horror film festival at Cité des Arts, and I’m also studying to get my teaching certification.

What advice would you give the younger you? Don’t listen to your parents or your bullies. You know who you are already, so be who you want to be.

What event in your life most shaped who you are now? The event that shaped my life was going back to college when I was 35. I met so many awesome supportive people, classmates and teachers, and I finally got to make my first movie.

What values do you live by? A big one is honesty. There is nothing worse than a person who doesn’t tell you the truth. I think honesty is important in all aspects.

What do you most appreciate? I appreciate my family and friends the most; the people that put up with me.

What is your favorite journey? My favorite journey so far is the one that I am on right now.

Where is your favorite place to be alone? I love to be alone in my room with my cats, reading a book or watching a good horror movie.

What living figure most inspires you? That would have to be a toss up between John Waters and RuPaul Charles. I love that these individuals are unapologetic about who they are. They authentically live their lives as their true selves. As a shy introvert, I wish I could be more like them and allow that extrovert inside of me to break free.

What was the best advice you were ever given? I don’t know where this advice came from, but the best advice I’ve heard is that, “The time is going to pass anyway.” For those times where you are about to go on a journey, and it seems so far away from the end.

What book would you tell everyone to read? Even as an adult, I love reading what I used to read when I was a teenager and that is the “Fear Street” book series.

What is the best thing about where you live? The best thing about Lafayette is the food of course! And I love food!

How do you “let the good times roll”? I love to sit on my back porch that my husband built by hand, and hang out with my best friends listening to music and playing board games.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Other than wanting to make horror movies, I actually wanted to be a fashion designer. I was always into fashion, even as a kid. I remember when I put together my first outfit in the ’80s. I was probably around 7 or 8. It was a white, black and hot pink shirt with a matching cap and hot pink biker shorts. I thought I was fabulous! When I was a teen, if there wasn’t a design out there that I wanted, I would cut up my clothes and sew them back together, terribly because I didn’t know how to sew, and create my own looks.

What is your motto? My motto right now is to do things that scare you the most and get out of your box. In my experience when you take scary chances, those are the most rewarding chances you’ll ever take!

How would you like to be remembered? I would like to be remembered as a person who did something to change their community and the world of horror films for the better.

What do you say to yourself when you doubt yourself? It’s hard getting out of my head sometimes. I try to think of the positive things that happened instead of focusing on the bad. Even though three cups have spilled, try to look at the two very full cups you still have that have beautiful sparkling water in them.

What three things are vital to BEing YOU? Creativity, horror, and changing my hair as often as I can.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “Geez, Louise!” “Werk.”

What is your favorite word? Flibbertigibbet

What do you collect? I really like to collect old clocks and lamps.

What food could you live on for a month? Either salad or my grandmother’s Cajun spaghetti.

What would you change about yourself? I would love to be able to just go up to a person and just know what to say to them.

What literary, movie or cartoon character do you most identify with? Lydia Deetz from “Beetlejuice”

Describe yourself in five words. I am a big weirdo.

What is your idea of happiness? Being on a movie set.

What is your favorite movie? A horror movie titled “May” directed by Lucky McKee. It’s about a creative, shy, awkward girl who can’t find a friend, so she makes one. I relate to this movie so much.

What music defines who you are? While my love is a melting pot for all genres of music from Josephine Baker, to Chopin, to Acid Bath, to Styx, to Britney Spears, the music that most definitely defines me is ’80s darkwave.

Who is your style icon? It’s another toss up … Tilda Swindon, Annie Lennox, and David Bowie. I gravitate towards the androgyny look.

What do you most regret? I most regret not trying things that I really wanted to do younger in life. But I’m doing it now and I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it as much when I was younger, so it’s not too much of a regret.

What question do you wish I’d asked? How many pets do you have and what are their names?

What would the answer be? 3 — Ruby(cat), Sonya(cat), and Rudy(dog)

We want to give thanks to the author of this write-up for this incredible material

Access Entertainment, owned by Len Blavatnik, has acquired James Packer’s stake in RatPac Entertainment. The deal makes Blavatnik partner with RatPac principal Brett Ratner and gives him co-ownership of RatPac’s film, TV and documentary business, and a big chunk of the RatPac-Dune venture that helps co-finance Warner Bros’ movie slate.

Ratner will retain his interest in RatPac Entertainment and continue as CEO. He will also become co-chairman alongside Access Entertainment president Danny Cohen, the former Director of BBC Television. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

Packer, the son of Aussie media tycoon Kerry Packer, becomes the second major RatPac investor to exit. The new U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin had to divest his stake in the company when he was confirmed for the Trump Administration job. There had been rumblings that Packer and Mnuchin’s stakes were up for grabs.

In 2013, RatPac partnered with Dune Entertainment on a multi-year motion picture co-financing arrangement with Warner Bros for up to 75 pictures which have included Gravity, The LEGO Movie, Annabelle, American Sniper, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, Suicide Squad, The LEGO Batman Movie, Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Wonder Woman, Justice League and Stephen King’s It.

Warner Bros.

RatPac also partners with New Regency with films including Oscar Best Picture winner Birdman and The Revenant.

It’s a major move into the U.S. entertainment business for Blavatnik’s Access, which currently has a drama financing venture with BBC Worldwide/Lookout Point, a 25% stake in international TV outfit Bad Wolf, and a development slate deal with House Productions.

“Warner Bros. is one of the great Hollywood Studios,” Blavatnik said in a release announcing the deal. “I have great respect for their leadership and am delighted to be partnering with Kevin Tsujihara and the studio alongside the unique talent of Brett Ratner. Together we will build on RatPac’s strategic partnership with Warner Bros.”

Said Ratner: “I am thrilled to be in partnership with Len and Danny. Len and I have shared the same vision and passion for movies, television and music over the years. Because of his experience and enthusiasm, RatPac Entertainment will be an even more formidable provider of quality entertainment worldwide.”

Packer and Ratner announced the creation of their film development, production and finance company in late 2012. The slate deal with Warner Bros came soon after that covered almost everything outside the studio’s Harry Potter franchise. RatPac has co-financed 67 films, grossing more than $10 billion in worldwide box office.

“Len has an incredible track record launching really successful business ventures, including Access Entertainment,” said Kevin Tsujihara, Warner Bros’ chairman and CEO.”We’re excited to continue our relationship with Brett and RatPac and look forward to working with Len, Danny and the entire Access team. I’d also like to thank James — he’s been a terrific partner the last three years, having worked with us on a number of key films, including Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad and The LEGO Batman Movie.”

According to Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, producer and co-producer for Netflix’s new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, the opportunity to make a sequel to the 1974 original was, pardon the pun, a nightmare come true. “It was impossible to say no,” the filmmakers raved, in press material that accompanies the release of the Netflix film tomorrow. “We feel stories like this need to … evolve with each generation like a favorite campfire story.”

Both filmmakers are native Uruguayans, and the title of the movie translates in their mother tongue to, roughly, The Madman With the Chainsaw. A title that hooked them straight away as youngsters. Add to that the mystique of watching the original on a friend’s banged-up VHS tape. And — yeah, this title always had something of an aura about it to the pair who’d go on to create something of a spiritual successor to it for the biggest streamer in the world.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Netflix trailer

In case you’ve lived under a rock for years and are unaware of this popular horror franchise, meanwhile? Here’s what you need to know. “After nearly 50 years of hiding,” Netflix teases, “Leatherface returns to terrorize a group of idealistic young friends who accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town.”

The friends are Melody (Sarah Yarkin), her teenage sister Lila (Elsie Fisher), and their friends Dante (Jacob Latimore) and Ruth (Nell Hudson). All of whom head to the remote Texas town of Harlow to launch a new business venture. But their dream soon turns into a waking nightmare, Netflix’s summary continues, when they accidentally disrupt the home of Leatherface.

He, of course, is the franchise’s deranged serial killer “whose blood-soaked legacy continues to haunt the area’s residents. Including Sally Hardesty (Olwen Fouéré), the sole survivor of his infamous 1973 massacre who’s hell-bent on seeking revenge.”

Scary movies on Netflix

As we’ve documented repeatedly, meanwhile, the arrival of this scary new original on the streamer is but the latest addition to a long and still-growing list of horror content available to Netflix subscribers.

After watching the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Some of the newest and more popular horror movies to check out on the streamer include the following. Which we list below with their Netflix links, as well as links to our recent coverage of each:

A scene from the new Netflix German-language movie “The Privilege.” Image source: Netflix

The Privilege: Here’s the basic plot of The Privilege. Years after his sister Anna’s death, 18-year old Finn is still haunted by nightmares. He also has demonic visions in his dreams. Per Netflix: “What his family dismisses as psychotic breakdowns due to a childhood trauma feels ever more real to him. As horrific events around him begin to escalate, he can no longer pretend that it’s all just in his head.” (Here’s where you can watch it on Netflix.)

Blood Red Sky: In this movie, a mother and son are boarding a flight from Germany to New York. The twist: First, it becomes clear early on that the mother takes special medicine, for some unseen but ominous ailment. Soon enough, hijackers enter the picture. Turns out, this mother can actually turn into a demon. So she has to fight the hijackers to save her son (watch it on Netflix here).

Countdown: This movie is about a nurse who downloads a pretty morbid app. It’s one that predicts the user’s exact time of death. At which point, per Netflix, “she discovers she has three days to beat the clock” and change her fate. (You can watch it on Netflix here.)

Fear Street Part One: 1994: From Netflix’s description: “After a series of brutal slayings, a teen and her friends take on an evil force that’s plagued their notorious town for centuries. Welcome to Shadyside” (watch it on Netflix here).
