Moving on, Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) is talking up his new movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, where he stars alongside Nicolas Cage, who plays a fictionalized version of Nicolas Cage. James Corden’s career has so far taken him from a town in Essex to the Broadway stage, and he has become a firm favourite in American households hosting The Late Late Show.
The English TV presenter will leave his hosting duties on The Late Late Show in summer next year after more than eight years, broadcaster CBS has announced.
The 40-year-old father-of-three, who is perhaps best known in Britain for his role as likeable mate Neil “Smithy” Smith in sitcom Gavin And Stacey, based in Essex and Wales, enjoyed favourable reviews when he was beamed into living rooms across the US for the first time at the helm of one of the country’s most popular television shows in 2015.
The comedian took over as presenter of The Late Late Show from Scottish-born comedian Craig Ferguson, who spent 10 years as host.
Corden, who grew up in Buckinghamshire, discovered a talent for making people laugh while at school, to the detriment of his educational achievements, and got his stage acting break in the musical Martin Guerre at the age of 17, although he quit because he found it boring.
The star, who harboured dreams of being in a boy band as a teenager, went on to land a TV role in a Channel 4 music business spoof Boyz Unlimited.
He then played a regular role in the ITV drama Fat Friends, where he became pally with actress Ruth Jones.
Roles in the stage and film version of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys and the movie Starter For Ten ensured he became a familiar face, and he developed into a national favourite thanks to the comedy series Gavin And Stacey, which he co-wrote with Jones and which graduated from BBC Three to BBC One.
His rise has not been without the occasional hiccup – his BBC sketch show with Mathew Horne and the movie Lesbian Vampire Killers showed he did not have an entirely gilded path.
He starred as part of the ensemble cast in the 2019 live-action remake of Cats, which was received poorly by fans, alongside other A-Listers including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen and Taylor Swift.
Corden, who played gregarious Bustopher Jones, told The New Yorker he had “a great time” making the film but did not have plans to ever watch it.
But he landed serious acclaim for his acting abilities when he starred in the National Theatre, West End and Broadway runs of the production of One Man, Two Guvnors.
The comedian has already enjoyed TV presenting roles, hosting sports shows A League Of Their Own and James Corden’s World Cup Live, as well as fronting the Brit Awards numerous times.
The Carpool Karaoke segment of his US show, which sees him sing in the car alongside various stars, has featured some of the biggest names in the music business including Sir Paul McCartney, Adele, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Justin Bieber and more.
In an interview with The Mail on Sunday’s Event Magazine in 2018, Corden paid tribute to late singer George Michael, saying Carpool Karaoke would never have happened without him.
Michael appeared in the first iteration of the sketch, inspired by Gavin And Stacey and filmed for Comic Relief, in 2011.
He told the publication: “It wouldn’t exist without him and his ability to laugh at himself. No question.”
In his personal life, Corden, who moved from London to Los Angeles with his family, has been married to Julia Carey since 2012.

What surprised the team most was the consistency that they found across the combined datasets. “We intuitively assume that people run faster for shorter distances and then would slow their pace for longer distances,” says first author Jessica Selinger, a neuromechanics researcher at Queens University. But this wasn’t the case. Most of the runners analyzed stuck with the same speed, whether they were going for a short run or a long haul over ten kilometers.
From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense that people would run at the speed that uses the least amount of energy. This caloric conservation is something that has been observed across the animal kingdom. But in the modern world, humans’ reasons for running have changed, and if the goal is speed, there are some tricks runners can use.
“Listening to music with a faster pace has been shown to help speed up stride frequency, which can then increase running speed,” said Selinger. In addition, picking faster running buddies can give you a boost.
Selinger and Hicks hope that having large pools of fitness data from wearables will help researchers to gain insights about populations. “You can look at connections with the built environment and access to recreation resources and start to layer all of that data to really understand how to improve physical activity and health more broadly,” says Hicks.

When it comes to real high-octane scares, it can be tough to get under the skin of a modern horror fan. Most of us have been jaded to Hollywood tactics since we were children, and have had to settle with other arenas of horror to keep our interests piqued. Sure, what’s not to love about a good splatter-fest or even a deeply twisted mystery? These faucets of our favorite genre are fun and thrilling, but sometimes we all still yearn for that the golden goose of horror: true, unquestionable scares. Luckily, our friends over at Prime Video have a selection of anxiety-inducing titles that will scratch the fear itch of just about any seasoned horror aficionado.
While scares are ultimately subjective, we’ve done our best to scour the current menu of genre offerings over on Prime Video to find the titles that truly go bump in the night. And I think we’ve found ten that will at least have you a little nervous when all is said and done. First on today’s list is the Korean fright-fest Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum from Jung Bum-shik and Park Sang-min. Titled after a very real psychiatric hospital, this chiller follows a very unfortunate crew filming a web series who venture into the aforementioned asylum in order to achieve viral fame. Things … go poorly. Scary, relentless, and totally outrageous, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is a terrifying must-watch for all fans of fear.
A more classic and historical horror title to make the following list is When A Stranger Calls starring Carol Kane. Based on a popular and very terrifying urban legend, this little spook show from filmmaker Fred Walton gifted us one of the scariest first acts in horror film history. The legacy of When A Stranger Calls lives on to this day and is even cited as the main inspiration for the legendary opening sequence in Wes Craven’s Scream. In 1993 a direct to television sequel titled When A Stranger Calls Back brought the characters of the first film into the 90s, and it’s also absolutely worth investigating.

A found footage freak show for the books, this indie hellride initially premiered at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, but would never see proper digital release until 2017 when Orion Pictures distributed it on DVD and Blu-ray via Scream Factory. This evil, mean, and gruesome shocker will leave even the most hardened horror fans in a puddle of panic. Fun fact: the mask used in this film was actually a quasi-official female-style Michael Myers mask which was quickly discontinued. Dubbed the Michelle Myers mask, this monstrosity is the epitome of uncanny discomfort.
And speaking of uncanny, a personal favorite from the aforementioned list has got to be The Town The Dreaded Sundown. While it won’t necessarily terrify today’s younger audiences, this bizarre meta-horror experience was worlds ahead of its time when it came to self-aware scares and true crime fascination. And while the 2014 Blumhouse remake is nowhere near perfect, it, too, captures a certain uncanny Texas/Arkansas borderline vibe that is worth every penny of that rental. Check both of these films out if you get the chance.

The answer is no, according to one TikTok user.
TikTok user JackMacBarstool discussed the green line test in an April 11 post, explaining that it considers body language in pictures of couples. If one partner, particularly the man, is leaning into his female partner in a photo, it means that his “axis” is being pulled in and that the woman who is standing straight wears the metaphorical “pants” in a relationship, he said.
A partner’s “axis” can be tracked by drawing a green line in the direction of their lean, or lack thereof. If a male partner is leaning toward his female partner in a photo of the couple, then they “fail” the test, which Mac said could be an omen that they will not work long term.

Excess mortality, which helps account for avoidable deaths from a new disease or situation, is defined by the difference between total current deaths and deaths expected based on earlier time period, usually the previous decade or so. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calculates these numbers weekly. For this study, the CDC excess mortality data were analyzed for the period between January 3, 2020, to September 26, 2021. For regional comparison purposes, areas of the country were broken down into the Northeast, Midwest, South and West.
“Our goal was to carefully examine regional differences in COVID-19 death rates based on reliable statistical data,” says Michael Stoto, Ph.D., professor of Health Systems Administration and Population Health at the School of Nursing & Health Studies and corresponding author of the study. “Our study is the first to quantify avoidable deaths and confirm that both COVID-19 deaths and avoidable deaths disproportionately occurred in the South.”
The investigators found that regional differences in COVID-19 mortality rates have persisted throughout the pandemic. The southern part of the United States has had higher mortality rates than the rest of the U.S. since the start of summer in 2020. Since October 2020, 48% of COVID-19 deaths were in the South, which makes up 38% of the population, pointing to disproportionate outcomes regionally.
The researchers also determined that between January 2020 and September 2021 there were 895,693 excess deaths associated with COVID-19, which is 26% more than reported by other experts who track disease. Although the official total neared on one million deaths in the U.S due to COVID-19 by late April 2022, based on this undercount the scientists believe that threshold was actually passed at the beginning of 2022.
These estimates of undercounts are important because most studies have looked at excess mortality at the state and county level in the U.S., but because of small population sizes, the studies have not examined patterns over time. Some earlier studies explored the relationship between COVID-19 mortality and age, education, and other factors as well as vaccine uptake, party affiliation, and other factors. But most studies have used reported COVID-19 deaths rather than excess deaths, as compared to what Dr. Stoto and collaborators have done, and may not be as statistically reliable.
“This is one of a series of planned studies to look carefully at the response to COVID-19 in the U.S. and other countries and to learn from the experience in order to strengthen preparedness for future potential outbreaks,” says Stoto. “Our team has also looked at testing and surveillance, and other COVID-19 metrics to understand how communities have come together to effectively deal with the pandemic.”

The researchers also determined that between January 2020 and September 2021 there were 895,693 excess deaths associated with COVID-19, which is 26% more than reported by other experts who track disease. Although the official total neared on one million deaths in the U.S due to COVID-19 by late April 2022, based on this undercount the scientists believe that threshold was actually passed at the beginning of 2022.
These estimates of undercounts are important because most studies have looked at excess mortality at the state and county level in the U.S., but because of small population sizes, the studies have not examined patterns over time. Some earlier studies explored the relationship between COVID-19 mortality and age, education, and other factors as well as vaccine uptake, party affiliation, and other factors. But most studies have used reported COVID-19 deaths rather than excess deaths, as compared to what Dr. Stoto and collaborators have done, and may not be as statistically reliable.
“This is one of a series of planned studies to look carefully at the response to COVID-19 in the U.S. and other countries and to learn from the experience in order to strengthen preparedness for future potential outbreaks,” says Stoto. “Our team has also looked at testing and surveillance, and other COVID-19 metrics to understand how communities have come together to effectively deal with the pandemic.”
In addition to Stoto, the other authors from Georgetown include Samantha Schlageter, who conducted this work as an undergraduate in the Health Care Management & Policy program at the School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS), and John D. Kraemer, an associate professor in Department of Health Systems Administration at NHS.

Po dvou covidových ročnících se značně osekaným počtem účastníků slavnostního ceremoniálu se letos Ceny Anděl vracejí v plné parádě. Vítězové budou oznámeni ve středu večer v pražském Veletržním paláci. Jména hlavních kandidátů na triumf ale napříč hudební branží rezonují už mnoho měsíců.
Ceny Anděl letos přišly s několika novinkami. Tou první a zřejmě nejviditelnější bylo tříkolové hlasování – veřejnost se nejprve v únoru v každé ze čtrnácti kategorií dozvěděla hned sedmičku jmen, na kterou chtěli akademici upozornit. Z tohoto předvýběru pak hledali užší finálovou trojici.
“Tři kola hlasování jsme se rozhodli zavést kvůli stále vzrůstajícímu množství vznikajících nahrávek. Předvýběr vzešlý z prvního kola má zajistit lepší orientaci pro akademiky a také upozornit na více umělců,” vysvětlil změnu předseda rady České hudební akademie Honza Vedral.
Díky tomuto kroku se v širším seznamu zejména hlavních kategorií skutečně objevilo několik interpretů, na které jsme v Andělech dosud nebyli až tolik zvyklí. Například rapper Viktor Sheen, podle týdenních statistik IFPI dlouhodobě nejstreamovanější domácí umělec současnosti, dostal hned čtyři příležitosti, což ho v tu dobu mohlo v očích některých pasovat na jednoho z horkých aspirantů na zisk některé sošky.
Zrádnost nového systému se však ukázala o dva týdny později se zveřejněním užších nominací, kde najednou Sheen úplně chyběl. Podobně dopadla skupina Jelen se svou třetí řadovkou “Věci & a sny” – přednominovaná byla hned třikrát, počet výsledných želízek v ohni ale zůstal na nule.
Další změnu přinesl zredukovaný orientační seznam pro první kolo výběru potenciální skladby roku. Zatímco v minulosti čítal často stovky písní, nyní se smrsknul na necelé čtyři desítky songů, přísně vybraných podle striktních kritérií, jako jsou hranost v rádiích a popularita na streamovacích platformách. Dlouhý výčet skladeb z minulých let podle rady České hudební akademie “trpěl neúplností a špatnou přehledností”.
Právě tento krok budil značné rozpaky – jako by tou nejlepší písní podle subjektivní volby Akademie nutně musela být některá z objektivně nejúspěšnějších. Nadále sice hlasujícím zůstala možnost vlastního tipu, ten je však obvykle v konkurenci předloženého seznamu obtížně prosaditelný. Kvůli riziku propadnutého hlasu je zkrátka pro většinu porotců jistější vsadit na některou z nabízených variant.
Navzdory těmto novinkám výsledné nominační trojice nenabídly žádná větší překvapení. Uspěli ti, o nichž se už v průběhu minulého roku i v jeho závěru při bilancování mluvilo a psalo nejvíce. A je to tak v pořádku – vždyť zisk ceny by neměl záviset na tom, jak jsou zrovna nastavena kritéria hlasování, ale především na kvalitách oceňovaného díla.
Tak by tomu bylo v ideálním, stoprocentně spravedlivém, světě. V něm však nežijeme, a tak je třeba si přiznat, že v Česku se do udělování mainstreamových cen promítají hned tři zásadní faktory. Subjektivní zdařilost nahrávek, u nás většinou udávaná recenzemi a převažujícím názorem ve velmi úzké hudební bublině, k nim samozřejmě patří.
Druhým, často ještě důležitějším faktorem, je však mediální zásah – ani sebevýjimečnější počin se většinou nedočká ocenění, pokud nemá dostatečnou publicitu. Tím spíš, když se letos počet akademiků vyšplhal až k číslu 370, což už znamená poměrně rozmanitou sortu porotců s různými preferencemi a vkusem. Silný mediální příběh je pojítkem, které zvyšuje šance.
Třetí faktor je tak trochu podprahový, přesto si jeho existenci připusťme: jde o prostou skutečnost, zda mají daného umělce lidé z hudebního oboru rádi. Právě tady hledejme vysvětlení toho, proč se někteří interpreti dostanou do nominací prakticky s čímkoliv, co natočí, zatímco jiným k tomu nestačí ani vyprodané haly a stadiony. Hlasují zkrátka pořád živé bytosti, ne stroje.
Favorité letošního ročníku splňují všechny tři zmíněné předpoklady.
Začněme třikrát nominovaným Vladimírem Mišíkem, jehož album “Noční obraz” lze označit za nečekaný dárek fanouškům pětasedmdesáiletého hudebníka. Když v roce 2019 přišel po devíti letech od poslední řadovky s Etc… s novou studiovkou “Jednou tě potkám”, nahranou s producentem Petrem Ostrouchovem a jeho skupinou Blue Shadows, šlo o nespornou hudební událost roku. Tehdy získal Mišík Andělů hned šest. Zdálo se, že jde o jeho loučení – zpěvák navíc loni kvůli horšícímu se zdraví definitivně ukončil koncertní činnost.
Navazující řadovka, nahraná v totožném složení, proto překvapila hned dvakrát. Jednak tím, že vůbec vyšla, a také tím, jak výborná je. Málokdo očekával, že by se zmíněné mimořádně uvěřitelné a příjemně civilní předchůdkyni mohla přiblížit, či ji snad dokonce v některých ohledech překonat. Stalo se. Podle čerstvě zveřejněných statistik IFPI to navíc byla nejprodávanější deska roku 2021 v České republice.
Ewa Farna má dokonce čtyři želízka v ohni. Deska “Umami” ji představuje v novém světle, jako stále mladou, již však dospělou a zcela soběstačnou popovou zpěvačku s rozhledem i názorem. Singl “Tělo” se dostal do médií prakticky jakéhokoliv typu, silnou odezvou na sociálních sítích počínaje, rozhovory na téma lásky ke své fyzické stránce konče.
Poslední dva ročníky byla s Anděly spojená jako jejich moderátorka, nyní se vrací jako žhavá adeptka na vítězství. A možná nejen jedno. V listopadu zabodovala v anketě popularity Český slavík a teď může svou jistou pozici na hudebním trhu stvrdit i vavřínem v cenách akademie.
A pak je tady David Stypka s albem “Dýchej”. Albem, jehož příběh zasáhl nejen zpěvákovy skalní fanoušky, ale i širokou veřejnost. Nahrával ho v době, kdy se pral s vážnou nemocí, které v lednu roku 2021 podlehl.
Navzdory tomu výsledných jedenáct písniček, dokončených jeho kapelou Bandjeez a producentem Martinem Ledvinou, překypuje nadějí, životní moudrostí a smířením. A třeba skladba “O lítání”, přestože z nějakého nepochopitelného důvodu dosud nebyla vydaná jako singl, se již nyní zařadila po bok Stypkových trvalek “Kříž” či “Jericho”.
V kontextu výše uvedeného by nejspíš způsobilo údiv, kdyby akademie přiřkla cenu pro album roku někomu jinému než právě Stypkovi, který má celkem tři nominační šance. S Farnou, s níž ho pojil nejen hit “Dobré ráno, milá”, ale i osobní přátelství, oba reprezentují rodný Moravskoslezský kraj, což lze vnímat jako další symboliku. Oba už tento týden navíc zabodovali na regionálních kulturních Cenách Jantar.
A pokud by navíc v kategorii skupin vyhráli Mirai, jejichž album “Maneki Neko” se sice nemůže pyšnit nadšeným přijetím kritiky, ale zato mělo z děl nominovaných souborů jednoznačně největší komerční dopad, mohl by se tento kraj dočkat naprostého andělského triumfu.
Nutno dodat, že triumfu zaslouženého – v současnosti totiž platí za nejplodnější líheň hudebních talentů u nás.

Další změnu přinesl zredukovaný orientační seznam pro první kolo výběru potenciální skladby roku. Zatímco v minulosti čítal často stovky písní, nyní se smrsknul na necelé čtyři desítky songů, přísně vybraných podle striktních kritérií, jako jsou hranost v rádiích a popularita na streamovacích platformách. Dlouhý výčet skladeb z minulých let podle rady České hudební akademie “trpěl neúplností a špatnou přehledností”.
Právě tento krok budil značné rozpaky – jako by tou nejlepší písní podle subjektivní volby Akademie nutně musela být některá z objektivně nejúspěšnějších. Nadále sice hlasujícím zůstala možnost vlastního tipu, ten je však obvykle v konkurenci předloženého seznamu obtížně prosaditelný. Kvůli riziku propadnutého hlasu je zkrátka pro většinu porotců jistější vsadit na některou z nabízených variant.
Navzdory těmto novinkám výsledné nominační trojice nenabídly žádná větší překvapení. Uspěli ti, o nichž se už v průběhu minulého roku i v jeho závěru při bilancování mluvilo a psalo nejvíce. A je to tak v pořádku – vždyť zisk ceny by neměl záviset na tom, jak jsou zrovna nastavena kritéria hlasování, ale především na kvalitách oceňovaného díla.
Tak by tomu bylo v ideálním, stoprocentně spravedlivém, světě. V něm však nežijeme, a tak je třeba si přiznat, že v Česku se do udělování mainstreamových cen promítají hned tři zásadní faktory. Subjektivní zdařilost nahrávek, u nás většinou udávaná recenzemi a převažujícím názorem ve velmi úzké hudební bublině, k nim samozřejmě patří.
Druhým, často ještě důležitějším faktorem, je však mediální zásah – ani sebevýjimečnější počin se většinou nedočká ocenění, pokud nemá dostatečnou publicitu. Tím spíš, když se letos počet akademiků vyšplhal až k číslu 370, což už znamená poměrně rozmanitou sortu porotců s různými preferencemi a vkusem. Silný mediální příběh je pojítkem, které zvyšuje šance.
Třetí faktor je tak trochu podprahový, přesto si jeho existenci připusťme: jde o prostou skutečnost, zda mají daného umělce lidé z hudebního oboru rádi. Právě tady hledejme vysvětlení toho, proč se někteří interpreti dostanou do nominací prakticky s čímkoliv, co natočí, zatímco jiným k tomu nestačí ani vyprodané haly a stadiony. Hlasují zkrátka pořád živé bytosti, ne stroje.
Favorité letošního ročníku splňují všechny tři zmíněné předpoklady.
Začněme třikrát nominovaným Vladimírem Mišíkem, jehož album “Noční obraz” lze označit za nečekaný dárek fanouškům pětasedmdesáiletého hudebníka. Když v roce 2019 přišel po devíti letech od poslední řadovky s Etc… s novou studiovkou “Jednou tě potkám”, nahranou s producentem Petrem Ostrouchovem a jeho skupinou Blue Shadows, šlo o nespornou hudební událost roku. Tehdy získal Mišík Andělů hned šest. Zdálo se, že jde o jeho loučení – zpěvák navíc loni kvůli horšícímu se zdraví definitivně ukončil koncertní činnost.
Navazující řadovka, nahraná v totožném složení, proto překvapila hned dvakrát. Jednak tím, že vůbec vyšla, a také tím, jak výborná je. Málokdo očekával, že by se zmíněné mimořádně uvěřitelné a příjemně civilní předchůdkyni mohla přiblížit, či ji snad dokonce v některých ohledech překonat. Stalo se. Podle čerstvě zveřejněných statistik IFPI to navíc byla nejprodávanější deska roku 2021 v České republice.
Ewa Farna má dokonce čtyři želízka v ohni. Deska “Umami” ji představuje v novém světle, jako stále mladou, již však dospělou a zcela soběstačnou popovou zpěvačku s rozhledem i názorem. Singl “Tělo” se dostal do médií prakticky jakéhokoliv typu, silnou odezvou na sociálních sítích počínaje, rozhovory na téma lásky ke své fyzické stránce konče.
Poslední dva ročníky byla s Anděly spojená jako jejich moderátorka, nyní se vrací jako žhavá adeptka na vítězství. A možná nejen jedno. V listopadu zabodovala v anketě popularity Český slavík a teď může svou jistou pozici na hudebním trhu stvrdit i vavřínem v cenách akademie.
A pak je tady David Stypka s albem “Dýchej”. Albem, jehož příběh zasáhl nejen zpěvákovy skalní fanoušky, ale i širokou veřejnost. Nahrával ho v době, kdy se pral s vážnou nemocí, které v lednu roku 2021 podlehl.
Navzdory tomu výsledných jedenáct písniček, dokončených jeho kapelou Bandjeez a producentem Martinem Ledvinou, překypuje nadějí, životní moudrostí a smířením. A třeba skladba “O lítání”, přestože z nějakého nepochopitelného důvodu dosud nebyla vydaná jako singl, se již nyní zařadila po bok Stypkových trvalek “Kříž” či “Jericho”.
V kontextu výše uvedeného by nejspíš způsobilo údiv, kdyby akademie přiřkla cenu pro album roku někomu jinému než právě Stypkovi, který má celkem tři nominační šance. S Farnou, s níž ho pojil nejen hit “Dobré ráno, milá”, ale i osobní přátelství, oba reprezentují rodný Moravskoslezský kraj, což lze vnímat jako další symboliku. Oba už tento týden navíc zabodovali na regionálních kulturních Cenách Jantar.
A pokud by navíc v kategorii skupin vyhráli Mirai, jejichž album “Maneki Neko” se sice nemůže pyšnit nadšeným přijetím kritiky, ale zato mělo z děl nominovaných souborů jednoznačně největší komerční dopad, mohl by se tento kraj dočkat naprostého andělského triumfu.
Nutno dodat, že triumfu zaslouženého – v současnosti totiž platí za nejplodnější líheň hudebních talentů u nás.
